Mannan-Oligosaccharides (MOS)
What are mannan-oligosaccharides?
Mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS) are non-digestible short-chain carbohydrates composed of up to 10 mannose molecules, linked by alpha (1,3) and (1,6) bonds.
Mannan-oligosaccharide based nutritional supplements are produced from the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. They are sold as prebiotics, which are nutrients that promote the growth of the beneficial intestinal bacteria.
Insufficient Evidence
There is insufficient evidence about the effect of mannan-oligosaccharides on the growth of the beneficial intestinal bacteria, prevention of gastrointestinal infections or overall immunity in humans.
According to some studies in animals, mannan-oligosaccharides can help prevent gastrointestinal infections, but there are no reliable studies of their eventual benefits in humans.
